Hi, in my planted 70g all my stem plants seem to one by one be rotting through at substrate level, most or the grassy type plants seem fine, and some are thriving, but i cant seem to get much luck with stem plants.
water paramaters are fine, and its a sand substrate.

dont know if its related but i also cant keep java fern, it just turns black and withers away.

From a biology perspective:
- rooted plants get most of their nutrients through their roots, so even if your substrate has no nutrients in it, their roots will grow.
- stem plants use their roots mostly to hold themselves in place. If there is too little nutrient in the substrate they sometimes shed their roots as a way of moving around and propagating the species. Low light can also cause them to want to float to the surface.

From a nutrition perspective:
- some micronutrient deficiencies will cause the stems and roots to be more susceptible to rotting. Boron is one candidate I think.

If your micronutrient ferts have Boron, I would try a solid fertilizer in the substrate near these plants, or even just mixing some laterite in with your substrate in that area.

Good luck

How much light do you have and do you know what the plants are?
