the tank has 5 and a bit watts per gal

What plants will work?

So let me get this straight. You have over 5wpg, but you want some plants that can do well under shade from a piece of drift wood?

Simple...crypts. There are many dif forms and colors (if you can find them) that should all do well in those conditions.

Crypts like was mentioned. Also java moss. Shorter leaved java fern would do as well. The taller leaves might not work .

what kind've lighting are you using? Florescents? Incandescents? metal Halides? 5 WPG is a lot of light! Anubias would work well in the shade aswell.

Yeah, with 5 wpg, I'm surprised you're not getting algae happy over there. Anything more than 3 wpg is a bit excessive, IMO.

What are you using, a football pitch floodlight?

Some people can't get that from metal halides and T5s ...

You can also try just about any anubias spp. As all but 1 I think are low light plants. Anubias nana also stays small.
