In many reef tanks I have seen, they are all packed with various types of corals and quite often really close to each other or even touching each other especailly when some of them expand their tentactles.

But is it really okay to let them in contact with each other?

It really depends on what corals are grouped together. There are some corals that can be touching and not have any side effects.

goniopra and goniopora can be touching....just like torches, frogspawns, and hammers can be touching.

A goni and a torch cant.......they would end up going into battle to defend their space. Im afraid the goni would lose

In most cases if you keep the same families together then yes they will be fine...

There are some where they will still engage in battle though.....Acropora species being one that pops into my mind.
