NERAC- Acropora tips from JB | |
terranova Fish Master Posts: 1984 Kudos: 1889 Votes: 229 Registered: 09-Jul-2003 | Real quick... I was luckily able to attend the first annual NERAC conference. Joe Burger, a fellow reef club member and an amazing speaker gave a presentation on the SPS that everybody loves, Acropora. I just thought I'd share some of his tips that he gave us, I figure they might be useful to someone, anyone. It's kind of random and disorganized, but I thought I'd share anyway. Here it goes: Acclimation/QT 1- Float for 10-15 minutes 2- Take out, let slime for 3-5 minutes 3- QT tank: 5 gallon w/ small heater and small powerhead 4- Dose Interceptor at 2x-3x avg. Watch and observe, wait 12-24 hours minimum. Longer doesn't hurt. Temporary placement in tank- one to two months Permanent placement in tank- keep at least 4" away from all other corals, 6" is better, superglue+epoxy Phosphate Control- GFI Granular Ferric Oxide Dosed w/ Carbon Water quality for acros- pH- 8-8.5, 8.2 temperature- 78*F-82*F Calcium- 400-450 Magnesium- 1800 Alkalinity- 8-10, 8 Care: Weekly WC's, 10%-15% Stay away from Caulerpa! Carbon- 1 cup/100 gal/1x a month [HydroCarbon, Black Diamond, Matrix] Cyano Control- "Special Blend" by Microbe-life, Note: *smells* Lighting: 250-500 PAR Those were just some quick things I jotted down that I thought could be helpful. HTH somebody! -Ferret [hr width='40%'] If genies were real and wishes came true, I’d rub the bottle and be holding you, I’d close my eyes, wish upon a star, open my eyes, and there you are… -Formerly known as the Ferretfish |

And, he's in MY reef club. Boo yah. His acclimation process/QT is what really fascinates me. I mean, most people freak if you let the coral out of the water, for whatever reason. He does it comfortably, all the time, with every coral that he gets. And not just any old coral, expensive ones. I think I'd be too scared to try it. >.< I meant to post the webby...guess I forgot. Thanks DRO. The most important thing was I learned about the whole Interceptor deal. Im not too worried about having corals out of water, especially SPS. Most SPS are use to it because of the tide. There are actually quite a few corals that do best when shipped with no water and just wrapped in a moist paper towel. [hr width='40%'] Hoping you are dreaming of me too... It's amazing how much some people (mainly customers at work) freak out, and I mean FREAK out, if I let their coral come out of the water when I'm bagging it. The look of terror on their face can be priceless. There were some customers that no matter how many times I told them it didnt matter, they still freaked out. That just made me do it that much more [hr width='40%'] Hoping you are dreaming of me too... Someday the miles will be less and we will dream together Your heart and mine Always and Forever... |
