hey guys,

My rocks have green algae all over it, and i think it is not coraline algae, i've been waiting half a year to see if it turns purpleish, and it didn't.
It doesn't look nice, its a very darkish green, some are darkish red, it sticks to the rocks and i can't brush it out, if you look closely it is a little hairy.

How can I get rid of it? It really makes my tank look dirty. I look at other peoples tank, and they only have purple coraline algae on their rocks, how do they do that?

ta.

The darkish red is probably cyano and you need to check for phosphates.
The green stuff sounds like hair algea and red and blue leg hermits due wonders on this or a algea blennie. My trochus snails even seem to love it.I believe an excess of nutrients is the cause of its growth.

Thats the problem right there I bet.

Start buying RO water from the LFS, or buy an RO unit. Use only RO water for water changes and top offs.

Most books I've read do not recommend distilled water for any tank since it has even helpful minerals removed. I've used springwater with my freshwater aquarium for years and had good success.

I've been seeing several references to Reverse Osmosis units for cleaning up tap water for aquariums. Now here comes a real newbie question .... Are these units hooked up to your faucet and used only when doing water changes or are they hooked up to your filter/skimmer in some way?

If your near a Walmart store they sell RO water labeled drinking water.Just read the ingrediants to make sure they didn't add anything undesireable to make it taste better.

With a SW tank you can use distilled water. Your salt mix will add all the minerals that you need back into the water.

Most have their ro units hooked up to a float switch, and plumbed to a storage container. I keep atleast 75 gallons or water made up at all times.
