bratyboy2![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 340 Votes: 1 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 ![]() ![]() | Okay heres the thing, I want to place a school of black neons, gold tetras, blue tetras, and pristillas tetras(x-ray tetras) with my schools of 5 dwarf neon rainbows, 8 neons, 10 white skirts(I want to thin the pop. of white skirts out to about 5-6 ) , 5 danios, 5 white clouds and 4 marble hatchets(plan to add a couple more soon). Am I hitting the max stock?!?!?! i plan to set up another 29 soon that will have a trio od cacatoo cichlids in their or maybe a pair or angels. ![]() ![]() |

Easy way to do this, multiply the number of fish by their maximum length. When you hit 29 you are at your stocking limit. From what it sounds like, you need to return most of the fish in that tank. |

fry![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Enthusiast Posts: 243 Kudos: 195 Votes: 3 Registered: 27-Jul-2004 ![]() ![]() | this 1"/gal rule of thumb is quite skewed. it really depends on the kind of fish, and even then, biologically speaking, one can hold twice that ammount and more in a tank. the main problem is the investment in time for maintainence, and the chances for overcrouding side effects (epidemic, for example), which indicate overcrouding, but also hard to determine beforehand. the second problem is the matching of the fish to such environment. you can cramp guppies into a tank with ease, and they'll live long and prosper. try doing that with african cichlids, and there will be bodies in the water in no time. schooling fish are more easily stocked than individual fish. diverse vegetation helps with territory. having all fish about as energetic as the others helps too, because there's nowhere to go away from the loud neighbours (for example, the neons might find the fast fish-on-acid danios threatening and annoying under crouded conditions). i think the best me for the bottom line, if you want to add more fish, even if you're not yet over the 1"/gal quota, add them a little at a time, and watch carefully for their behavior and others behavior too. if they get along and act freely, i think it's ok. That would make it 61 or 67 fish. I think that 's little much for 29 gallon. Yes, I don't agree with the 1 inch per fish rule either, but it is a good rule of thumb when folks are starting up. |
