I'm the first to allow that tetras are a little lacking in the brains department, but many species do have some nice behaviors.
So - what do you think is the most fun tetra, behavior-wise? Most interesting? Most intelligent? Best display?
(And if you choose a big characin like Piranha, please pick a smaller species as well!)

Well, I do agree that they're not the brightest fish, but some of them are pretty nice looking. The only tetras I have or have had are the three lemony fresh ones swimming around in my tank at the moment. Though I did just get them today, I must admit they've grown on me. They are kind of nice looking, due to their yellow, but I've noticed that the only behaviors they've put on display are schooling, and swimming away when anything goes near the tank. Oh well, maybe they'll be more interesting once I've gotten three more.

The only characins I'm aware of that have any really interesting behavior are Beckford's Pencilfish, where the males are continuously swimming up to each other and shimmying their bodies as a nonviolent challenge. (One source says that when two males are competing this way over a female, they frequently get so wrapped up in each other that they completely forget about her, and the female has to come swimming up to remind the boys what all this is supposed to be about.)

Well, I don't necesserily mean cichlid-level behavior, just "this one has a pretty display" or "this one seems to have a cool hierarchy." Nothing too complex required, just something other than school, school, school, school some more, hide, school.

For example, I'm partial to the displays of Black Phantom Tetra males - when they start flaring at each other, despite the relative lack of color, I can't take my eyes off of them.

The pencilfish sound cool, and they're cute, too.

...An update on the behavior of my new lemon tetras. They seem to enjoy 'current surfing', though I thought it was mostly cories that did that. Also, the lemons seem to like playing Follow the Leader, in the sense that one of them will dart a few inches away, then the others will follow in a line. Crazy fish!

black phantoms, definitely. the description earlier of beckford's pencilfish actually sounds very similar to the black phantoms' behaviour.also although they arent "colourful" as such they are a lovely shiny irridescent black when healthy and have a blue/green/purple bit behind their eyes.

i bought mine wihtout knowing much about them and now i'm glad i did.

I have 1 of each of the following:
Neon, Black Neon, Congo, Emperor, Glowlight, and Silver-tipped.
My favorite is the Emperor Tetra- he has such a cool tail, and I love the blue over his eyes. My Silver-Tipped is pretty cool too, he thinks he's a Bala Shark

The black phantoms can definitely be interesting to watch when the males feel like showing their fins!

Splash tets and congos have the most personality, IMO, probably because they aren't as school oriented as other species.

I know Cardinals are'nt normally the most interesting fish but i have 1 Cardinal which im very attached to. I have about 6 Gold neons in the tank and a few Rams and only the one Cardinal. Well anyway the Cardinal chases the neons back and forth like they playing tag, then when his finished doing that he follows my rams around probably thinking he is a Ram. Also when it's feeding time he is so confident he eats the food straight out of my fingers, thats not very common for a Cardinal.
