Anyway, back to the topic in hand ... If my understanding is correct, they're the same species. Gymnocorymbus ternetzi has been saddled with dozens of common names in the aquarium hobby. The ones I've heard of include: Black Widow (the usual choice of name in the UK), Black Skirt, White Skirt, Petticoat Tetra, Blackamoor, Black Tetra, Butterfly Tetra, and I suspect there's a lot more to add to that list. Just a quick Google search on the scientific name above will throw up more of these in assorted articles, such as: This one ... This one ... This one ... And this one ... No doubt you'll come across more common names in your search. I gather the number of common names for this fish runs into double figures with ease in the English language alone, before you start adding up all the ones in Spanish, Portuguese (the official language of Brazil) and German among the main European languages that produce aquarium literature in quantity internationally. Throw in the Far Eastern names (Chinese, Japanese and Malay), plus the plethora of names that abound in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, and you develop an appreciation for the universality and absence of ambiguity of taxonomic names very quickly ... Oh yes, and of course we now have different colour varieties and finnage variations, which look set to add to the common name confusion over this fish even more ... |
