female
Number of fish: 6
Ratio expected to use: 1 female to 2 males

Water stats:

PH: 6.0
GH: 7
KH: 1
Temp: 75

Tank size: Should I use a 2.5 gallon or a 10 gallon?
Substrate: Should it be bare bottom or with marbles?

Do I put the tank in a dark area or cover it?

I appreciate all help

Gurlie

Ideally, both - put in a dark area, THEN cover it once spawning is finished. Neon eggs are photosensitive, and require near total darkness for 72 hours minimum.

Oh, and don't forget, soft, acidic water - pH 6.6, no more than 4dH - and condition your breeders with lots of live food!

I agree you have to have the right conditions for them to breed.

I found it easy to breed noens. Get a large school 10+ with more females than males(the males will focus on the females and breeding rather than the males). The males will fight a lot during breeding and will damage each other so the ratio should have more females.

When I did a water change the neons would spawn the next day every day. The eggs I could not get to hatch.

The colony members all died off and all I have left is two females.
