I have a male gold and a female blue, and these are by far some of the peacefulest fish i own. I used to have two golds and three blues and they got along just fine together. There was a male in both colors, and the rest were females.

What I want to know is why everyone thinks gourami's are aggressive. I used to have one gold and one opaline in my 55g with cardinals and they were fine, not a problem at all. Today I have a single opaline gourami in my 25g still with cardinals and he is fine aswell, he is not aggresive one bit.

Yeah i understand that, 3 in a 25g is alot different that 2 in a 55g, but i'm referring to the post by sin in style saying that he has read threads of gourami's killing each other and other fish in the tank.
And also that he does'nt want to keep 2 in a 75 because of the agression. What agression? That's what i want to know.

I have two female pearl gouramis in my 46 gallon heavily planted tank, and they are always in some sort of competition with each other. Usually it's just chasing, but I once witnessed them "kissing" for about 10 minutes. They are only 3" long, which I believe is full grown for a female of this species, but I couldn't imagine them in a 25 gallon.

Fortunately, they are both the same size, so they "take turns" being the dominant one. This means that neither of them gets picked on for too long.

IME, blue gourami aggression is overexaggerated. I doubt that anyone here has ever personally experienced a blue gourami tearing up another of it's own species. While there maybe aggression, it's usually, IME, only in the form of chasing and ther occassional fin nipping--and this is in the relatively overstocked confines of a LFS. In my 75 gallon, there was no aggression whatsoever. Nothing that holds up to the ripping machines that they have been depicted to be on this thread, at least. Also, I agree with Bruce that pearls are some of the most peaceful gouramis out there. never once have I seen them snap at any other fish.

Heh... Mine are the dominant fish in the tank. They chase other fish from the algae wafers and then hog them all to themselves.

Well I did get them at a major chain store, which is kind of like a fish ghetto. I guess they had to be tough just to survive there.

Well, they're a store. Let's face it; there are some wonderful, knowledgeable pet store employees in the world, but the great majority are A) uninformed and B) just trying to sell as many fish and as much stuff as possible.
We're just trying to help; it is as they say your tank and your money but really, think it through: three 4" heavy-bodied fish, three aggressive, territorial 5" fish, and some others besides - all in a little ol' 25 gallon tank? Does that really seem - to you, not to me or the pet store employee or anyone else - like it's reasonable? Common sense plays a big role in fishkeeping, but you have to think about the fish, not just about what you want. No one wants dead fish.

In general Gold and Opaline gouramis are peacefull fish, I have kept them for a while and have never had a problem with them killing or harming other fish. I still hear storys of them being super agressive but I can never belive them.

Also, to comment on something Sin stated, the 1 inch of fish per gallon does actually work most, or 90% of the time for fish 3-4 inches and under. But, it is not used to determine what fish you keep, it is used strictly for the bioload capacity. So this rule cannot be compared to things like aggression and territories, it is used only to know the bioload of your tank, as related to your biological filter.

You can't keep that many gourami's in a 25g,
How about

1 gourami (only 1)
2 swordtails
some cories (instead of the pictus & upside down)
and maybe a few tetras.

That way you have a complete tank, with the top, middle and bottom full.

eh... 4 gallon tank for a 4" gourami? No thanks.

I would wager that in a 25 gallon tank, you could keep a lace gourami, a school of cardinals, and some sort of bottom feedr no problem. Some swords may get a little large for the tank with the gourami, so I denno.

Also, i hate to say this, but i hope your LFS DOESNT have the fish you want, so you arent just killing these fish

<---I'm assuming that was directed towards the topic creator.

Okay, her's the deal. I don't quite understand why you'r even posting here if you're not accepting other people's suggestions. We clearly stated only ONE Tri. gourami species in the tank, no pictus cats, and preferrably no blue gouramis in general. If you don't feel like taking the advice given to you, that's fine, as it's your money. However, you contine to post, and are ignoring our comments. Why? It's seems like you're just rationalizing with yourself that the three gouramis are okay in a 25 gallon--which they are not. Either that or your waiting for one of us to say "hell with it---those fish are fine in your tank". If you keep on asking, you'll get the same answer-they're not. So either listen to the constructive criticism given to you, or stop posting althogether about your plans for stocking tanks.

That being said:
1 lace
1 gold<--no
1 opaline<---no
2 pictus<--no
2 upside down

just to clarify further;

ONLY ONE GOURAMI, REGARDLESS OF SPECIES. ONLY ONE. NOT ONE OF EACH KIND. ONE. GOURAMI. OKAY? OKAY.
