Are these tetras nippers? Would they be able to cohabit peacefully with pygmy Sparkling Gourami's, Platinum and Neon Tetra's, Rams? Or would the smaller fish get harrassed and damaged.
Is a group of half a dozen sufficient together?

Yup, diamond tetras would be just fine with all of the fish that you mentioned. They are quite peaceful, and will be happy in a school of six. I personally like this tetra a lot, because of their beauty, and the fact that they do not bother other tankmates.

Yup yup yup and yup. Very peaceful tetra, who *should* enjoy being in a school of 6+ and as Nick mentioned, tend to be very pretty. I think Babel has some experience with these guys...COUGH COUGH.

Hmmm... interesting.. they are down at the lfs, at a good price too - I do like the congo tetra, but apart from their potential size, they are very expensive here.

In the lfs their common name is listed as 'Pretty Tetra', and the assistant did say that they are a nippy tetra. Hopefully, we will hear further reports of their not being so.

I think that your lfs is mistaken. The garnet tetra (Hemigrammus pulcher) is the real "pretty tetra", as it is one of their common names. Plus, I'm pretty sure that both of these tetras are peaceful.
Fish stores aren't always right, I've had one that said that opaline gouramis only reached two inches.

I've heard once or twice that Pretty (aka "Garnet" or "Stop-and-Go-Light" Tetras can be nippy -- although, the only time I ever kept a few, I saw no sign of it.

As for Diamonds, I have more experience with them; and while I've found them to be delicate, I have never seen the faintest sign that they're nippy -- nor have I read anyone who says so.

i've kept diamonds for over 15 years - they are a lovely, peaceful fish. the more the merrier, of course, as with pretty much every tetra. 6 is cool, though.

Yes, read last night that the 'Garnet' tetra is known as the 'Pretty' tetra. Maybe this is where the lfs is getting confused - that it is the 'Pretty' tetra which is the nipper, but those tetra's were definately Diamond Tetra's.

Well, you certainly don't have to worry about them being aggressive. You may have to worry about them being delicate, though -- I've had consistent trouble with them, although some other people on this site haven't. (It may have something to do with the fact that, since they come from a large Venezuelan lake, they prefer neutral water rather than the mildly acid water that most tetras prefer.)

Bruce may have been unlucky with his, and got wild caught ones. They can be delicate as he's found to his cost.

Tank bred ones, on the other hand, are much more robust. If the survival rate of the Diamonds in a local DIY store with a pet-store addon (yes, one of those places - the sort you go to to rescue the fish - sigh) is an indication, then tank bred Diamonds can be tough. And, my local water is fairly soft and acidic, perfect for other South American tetras such as my Cardinals and Lemons
