I started my first tank 18 months ago with a group of neons for cycling. They all survived and lived very happily in the tank throughout its development until about 3 months ago when i put them in my new QT tank to keep it tickin' over. A few of them died in the QT (lead from plant weights, i think). Then about 2 months ago I decided to use some neons to cycle my girlfriend's tank. Of the 4 that went to her, all but one died during the cycle. Now, everything is fine and all the parameters check out. However, the remaining neon (female) which has never had full colour, has had it's red stripe turn very dark, almost black. What's wrong with her and is there any way to fix it?

1st of all...im surprised u used neons to cycle tank...neons r usually the 2nd or 3rd fish of choice for the tank...now, with the question...i think its just the constant stress made the abnormal coloration...if she will regain her red color..only time will tell...feed her color-enhancing flakes and try to keep her in just one place and get her companions and wait. otherwise, i dont know how long will the neon live in there!!!

Probably the most important thing you can do for this poor fish is to get it some company. If the water conditions are ok, then its deffinately time to give this social butterfly a ball to attend.

I think that it's better to add more Neons to the one you already have & feed them flakes that helps the colour, so your Neon will get the red stripe back & live happily with the new Neons.

Your neon would do better if you added additional neons.
