I have heard slight rumblings about these guys, but no more information than what is in the title...I do not think they are purple emperors, however, because they are supposedly very new and very rare.

Does anybody have any other tidbits of information?

Have you actually seen them before? If so, could you describe them?

I can't really think of any purple tetras besides the Cochu's blue tetras, which isn't very rare and isn't very new.

Bruce Moomaw told me about this - it's a member of the Genus Inpaichthys, possibly I. kerri, and thus related to the Cochu's Blues.

I am not sure, it probably is something related to the Cochu's. Happy Birthday!

I. kerri is called a purple emperor or blue emperor. Very pretty, feisty fish; I found mine online.

I've finally managed to get my hands on a large school of them (for the first time since the 9-11 attack) -- and at the moment they are all doing splendidly. More details to follow when I start a new thread here.

Hm nope not an emperor tetra..Shoot I saw a picture somewhere, but I can't remember where. It's not a cochu's blue but may very well be related?
I think it is relatively new but not dyed..I haven't found any information on it yet.

Bruce - How do you think blue emperor tetras would do in my 15 gallon tank? Tankmates would be danios. Planted, pH 7.2 and fairly soft water (I think gH 20 and kH 40? I forget )

PS thanks AntiFishman!

Lyndzi -- you might possibly (and I'm not even sure about this) reduce the pH of your tank very slightly further. Other than that, I doubt there would be any trouble -- Blue Emps are big enough that I doubt the Danios would pick on them.

Be sure, however, that you use Blackwater Tonic -- my latest batch is doing tremendously better than my previous attempts, and I suspect the guy in "Tropical Fish Hobbyist" who said they need something like it to help fight off bacterial infections was correct. (By the way, my males are already starting to color up beautifully even when they're only half grown.)

Thank you very much! I may indeed get a couple, I saw some the other day and they were quite small, actually rather skinny too, but otherwise looked very colourful.

Do you know where I can order blackwater extract? Is it availible online? I can't seem to find it. I will ask my LFS but they do not have much availible, besides indian almond leaves.

There are quite a few companies that manufacture it; you can find them on the Web easily by using Google. I myself use Tetra's "Blackwater Extract"; it seems to do the job just fine, and it's the cheapest and most available. (It's basically just a mixture of peatmoss extract with a collection of B vitamins.)

I'm a little worried that those Blue Emps you saw seem a bit "skinny"; they may already be carrying bacterial infections, to which the magazine writer said they are very susceptible without the tonic. If you succumb to temptation and buy them, I'd suggest an antibiotic treatment.

I ended up getting 8 regular emperors, and 10 cochus blues. They were on ridiculously cheap and there were no blue emps. I'm still going to keep an eye out for nice ones though Thanks Bruce!
