It's better not to buy Dyed Fish, It's better for us, for our hobby & for the poor fish. There are alot of fish with different colours, we don't have to support "man made colours" fish.

I still don't understand why folks buy dyed fish as there are so many colors of fish that aren't dyed.

People buy dyed fish for two main reasons.

1) The majority of folks who buy them do not know that the dyed fish have artificial colors; and are not aware that the dyeing process is harmful to the fish.

2) They think that the fish look neat. Again, they are oblivious to the fact that the colors are artificial. I don't know of any dyed fish that are not freshwater; it is apparent that folks like the saltwater-bright colors on the cheap, widely-available and easy to care for freshwater fish.

What about that color enhancing food from tetramin? Wife got it accidentally, it does seem to increase the colors on my 2 fantail guppies (only fish I've fed it to). Instructions say to use as a supplement to regular feedings on occasion. I'm thinking it is just a higher vitamin/mineral content, but that is just a seat-of-the-pants thinking.

Any thoughts?

actually, all that colorful dried food has all sorts of pigments in it.
afaik, the color of the food IS the pigments inserted into the food.
i'm far from being a marine biologist, but i think that the pigments are harmless to the fish at the regular dosage (like carrots and curry are harmless to people, but make them change color a little).

i think the food pigments are prduced from algea, but i'm not sure (it's similar to the stuff they give to salmons to enhance their color).

As far as color enhancing fish food I wouldn't be concered with that. It's not even close to the same thing as comercially died fish (acid baths, injections, etc.) Infact I've been feeding my guppies TetraColor Tropical Flakes as a staple food for many years and I'm convinced it does enhance colors. They seem to enjoy and some of my oldest females are nearing 2 years old so it seems safe to me.

I also tried to stop people from buying Dyed fish, afyer explaining what tey do to the fish & how it's injected. Some of them didn't buy them but some told me to "#*@#" off & bought them.
