Hey Sneaky_Pete - I'm not sure where you are in BC but I made a couple of calls and one of the local fish stores around me said they may be getting some in soon (maybe in tomorrows arrivals). I'm in Vancouver so if you're in the neighbourhood, PM me and I'll give you their info.

I still cant find any. I asked 2 different local stores to find out if they could order some in for me, and would I get any kind of deal if I order 10 of them, and neither store called me back about it. This has happened twice now. The other store who did contact me through email, said they dont order them because they are sickly.
The silver ones are nice, but I really like the marbled ones. I may have to take a trip down to Victoria and see if they have any at the stores down there, while I go to see if I can find Sneaky Pete the angelfish a mate!

I'd hate to burst your bubble, but are hatchetfish even tetras? Just wondering.

Down here in the Armpit of Ontario (Windsor), we see these all the time. Our local Petsmart usually has throngs (spread throughout a few tanks ) of these fish. Sometimes, they are unfortunate enough to land in a tank with a more aggressive species and become a quick lunch.

A lot of the Mom And Pop LFS's carry these as well.

Won't help you, but just so you know I haven't seen them on Langley petsmart's order list lately; which likely means that Delta Aquatics doesn't have any available. Since they are a major supplier (at least for all the local chain stores) that could mean they are just hard to come by for us right now. There are lots of big silvers coming in, though since you're on the island that won't help much. *shrugs* they seem to be seasonal.

I'm so adjective, I verb nouns!

Oh too bad. Have you tried calling one of the big guys, like Big Al's ? Maybe they can hook you up with someone over your way ?! If I thought they would travel well, I'd offer to bring you some when I head over to Victoria for my holiday next month !

I wish , Im on Vancouver Island.
I did try ordering some, but the lady never did call me back and let me know if she could get them or how much they would be.
That was last week.
I am going to try again once I get the occupants of the 25g settled into the 90.

Hi all,
I was just wondering if any fellow canadians have seen Marbled Hatchetfish in their fish stores? My favorite LFS in BC here, said that he cannot get me any Marbled Hatchetfish because they are sickly and not very common. He can get me silver ones, but if I wanted silver ones I would have asked. I have seen marbled ones one time in a different store in a different town.
Has anyone else heard about "sickly uncommon" marbled hatchetfish??

heh
I know they fly! Hence why we built a nice tight fitting top, for those fish who like to just "take the leap" ever now and then!
I am thinking a group of 20 would be very nice in my 90g. I am hoping they wont be too expensive though, or perhaps I can get a discount for ordering so many.
I really am looking forward to getting some of these little guys, they sure are neat fish!

Oh yes. These things are ROCKET PROPELLED once they decide to become airborne. A 1 inch Hatchet can propel itself 6 feet with ease!

Almost forgot ... my "Jumping Fishes" Baedecker Tour ...

That's perfectly in accord with everything I know about them. (Don't forget that they are actually the world's only real "flying" fish -- their huge chest keel holds powerful muscles hooked to their pectoral fins, which they use to flap those fins fast enough to actually get some lift out of them that allows them to glide through the air after a leap much farther than they would otherwise, both to escape enemies and chase flying bugs. They will jump out of a tank at the drop of a hat.)

I see them in Ontario all the time.
It's funny you don't.My lfs guy says he gets them in all the time and he doesn't find them that sickley.
Normally he gets reports of them dieing from exiting the tank.(jumping?)

Thats what I would have thought.
I think I will tell the LFS that I want to order them regardless of their "delicacy". I think that being as they are a close relative to the tetra family, they will be a nice tough fish like any other. I think they will make a great addition to my tank.

Surprising -- they're very common in California, and I've never gotten the impression that they're particularly delicate either. (There are some other species of Hatchets that turn up only rarely in the stores, however, that do have a reputation for delicacy, such as Carnigiella marthae.) The only thing that's kept me away from Hatchets is that they're the ultimate in jumping fish, and I can easily visualize them jumping out of that library tank I maintain when the staff are trying to feed them.
