Hiya guys,

My colleague wanted to know. Mine don't seem to last long so I decided to keep others.

What size are you getting them at? How long ARE they lasting for?

At my LFS we sell the babies for just .99 cents each, and then we sell the bigger ones for $1.99 or so.

If your tank is cycled, and the water is AOK, then you shouldn't be having a problem with your neons.

I don't know of an exact lifespan, but they should be alive for many months...as long as you get them healthy and feed 'em right. Sometimes stores get in week batches of neons, and there's that whole thing with NTD...If you're water is okay I'd try going to a different LFS.

Oh...based on the neon tetras profile here they can live up to 7 years...

EDIT: *learns to spell* :%)

Neons can live for YEARS. The only fish I've heard of that can't live for at LEAST a year are some killifish. A lot of people have a misconception that fish just live for a couple of months, then die. It doesn't help that a lot of fish are small and would only seem to live a short life.

How long are your tetras living after getting them? If it is a couple months, then it is most likely the store is not to blame. Any problems the fish had at the store would have shown up within a few weeks after purchase. Neon tetras usually are not the hardiest of fish.

What are your water parameters? pH, hardness, what other fish do you keep them with, etc., etc..

Hiya guys,

I was just enquiring on behalf of a colleague. My colleague's tetras have been there for some months and doing fine, she is just concerned when one of them seemed a little lethargic which is not them. She wondered if they were getting too old or something.

I can't really recall the details about the tetras I kept. Usually it's the NTD that gets to them or the other time I had some Zebra danios who assasinated my other fish.

I have heard that neon tetras on average live for a year, maybe less. It depends on how inbred they are, how old they are when you get them, and what they have been through in their lives.
I have never heard of a neon living beyond the 2 year mark. At least not since the 1970's.
