I got some black skirt tetras when I first started my tank in June. The sign at the fish store said that they would not grow over an inch long.] I have six in a tank with an algae eater and the only guppy left after a round of fin rot(. The tetras have gotten really big. I want to get rid of them because they are really too big for my tank and I don't want them to die from stress. They hide when anyone is near the tank. Even when I feed them they wait till I leave to come out and eat so I do not get to enjoy looking at them. Any advice is very welcome.

You could see if a lfs would take them for trade, or just take them off your hands if you really want to get rid of them.

Selling on [link=AquaBid]http://www.aquabid.com/" style="COLOR: #FFFFC0[/link] is another option, or local classifieds.

Good luck.

Many LFS's will give you store credit when bringing back fish. Or like Theresa said, Aquabid is an option.

Have you considered upgrading your tank to a bigger one?

I'm not entirely sure if this is your problem, but I noticed that when I added barbs to my community, it made my black phantom tetras come out of hiding. Because the barbs are so active, they kind of brought the tetras back to life. Providing there's enough room, you could always try adding a more active fish.

best of luck got any pics?

LFSs that give credit are usually the smaller ones, so start with those if you are giving them away.

Large chains tend to not want to pay for them. I think some might actually be under contract to not even accept any fishes from anyone else.

thanks. I found another small fish store in a town near mine that will take on exchange. I wonder what kind of fish to get in exchange? I am getting a twenty gallon for my birthday. I have some panda corys on hold for me. They will be big enough to sell by the time i get my tank cycled. They are really cute.

Well, you could choose a smaller tetra, dwarf cichlids, barbs, danios, rasboras, etc.
Personally, I'd pick out a small, peaceful tetra, such as silvertips or rummys. It is always nice to have schooling fish in a tank, because it's just fun to sit back and watch their behavior.

Don't just go with what I like, though. Head on down to your lfs and write down the names of some of the fish that catch your eye. Or, you can just rely on us to give you ideas.

Either way, it's your tank. You choose what you like.

A fairly small LFS in my area is willing to give 50% retail price as store credit. The larger chain fish store (yes, there is a chain fish store in existence!) refused, on the grounds that quarantine was cost-ineffective compared to simply getting a shipment in - a highly understandable position. They did, however, offer to adopt fish to put in a display tank or send home with an employee.
