If they are not scared, then I would say that congo tetras are fairly active.

i had a school of serpae that were pretty active, and had a relatively elaborate group structure. they certainly had a heirarchy. they also keep a loose formation, and spread out for the night.

when i only introduced them, it was "west-side story" gang fights (finger-pinching and all) with the danio gang. after a few weeks they accepted their roommates, and lived well with them.

Buenos Aires tetras are great! Larger, always on the move, stick together. Great fish! I plan to get more!
I think a tetra tank would like great with 6-10 Buenos Aires Tetras, 10 Silvertips, 10 Glowlights, 10 Penguins, and 40 neons. That would probably have to be at least a 55g though....would look great though *dreams*

My black skirt tetras are some of my most active and interesting fish. They chase eachother around, aren't scared of anything, swim alongside my yoyo loaches, are voracious eaters, and eat tubifex worms right from my hand. Black skirts are also very hardy and long-lived. My lemon tetras are pretty, but not too smart or interesting.

Bloodfins are an active tetra, and like the rummys, are also strong schoolers. They are also very hardy, and long lived. Columbians are quite active also, a larger tet, and remind me of a smaller, but more colorful piranha.

I'll second that, my black phantoms don't school in the slightest...well..until I stick my hand in the tank

Each one has its own favourite spot which it goes back to to sleep.

I think a lot depends on the tank setup, what other fish are in there as well.

I once had a tetra tank: cardinals, lemons, and glowlights. While they looked great, they really didn't do much at all. I have a school of black phantoms in a community tank-kribs, angel, guppies, etc-and while they aren't the best schoolers IME they are definitely active.

my black phantoms are always chasing each othr round the tank, the males do a nice ltes-circle-round-each-other thing aswell. And they're pretty too, best of both worlds.

Cochu's blue tetras are extremely active. Mine do not nip, but they play a game of tag with each other. They need active tankmates, though. The blues are my favorite tetra. I don't think they should probably be in the same tank as your neons. They will stay in the upper third of your aquarium. They eat any food offered.

I agree with the posts that suggest that rummy nosed tetra are active most of the time. I also have a school of X-ray or priscilla (sp?) tetra. They aren't the most active fish I have ever kept, however when there is food around they are always the 1st to start the feeding frenzy!!

If you want interesting you want rasboras, danios, or white clouds to start.

Actually, I forgot Beckford's Pencilfish -- the males are constantly engaged in swimming up alongside each other and shimmying their bodies as a nonviolent challenge. Initially I thought this was a mating ritual -- but as it turns out, when two males are competing for a female, they frequently get so wrapped up in "dissing" one another in this way that they completely forget about her, and she has to swim up and remind them what the whole thing is supposed to be about.

Combine this with the fact that male Beckfords tend to try to eat each egg the female produces the moment it comes out of her -- unlike most egg-eating fish, which at least give the eggs a chance to escape -- and one can't help thinking that where reproduction is concerned, male Beckfords are a little unclear on the concept. Apparently all this isn't seriously cutting down on the population, though.

I find the Rummy noses rarely stop moving. Initially they parade up and down the front of the tank, but as they get used to their surrounding and feel safe they are pretty much everywhere.
