Add 1 more and it'll be okay, depending on the size of the tank, anything smmaler than 10 gallon is to small, apart from that it'll be okay.

I agree, you should at least add one more, but if the tank size permits, I would shoot for an even larger school of at least 9.

What is your tank size?

My neons (currently 8) are schooling sometimes but they also like to go their own way, some hanging out in the plants, next to the heater, or wherever they claim their little territory. At some point, I had only 6 and I could see a difference in their behavior. It seems that 6 is really the bare minimum for these fish in order to feel secure and confident.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

5 is fine i keep mine in 3s when i breed them
the trick is if the tank is heavily planted or decorated so they have trobles seeing each other more numbers r needed if there in a tank thats almost bare around there swimming area (mostly the bottom) less numbers r needed in the school

ive had 5 neons 2 males 3 females in a 5gallon tank now for over a year n they breed on average twice a month give or take a break in there spawning habits
