Are you planning on having a tank with just neon tetras? If you are, then you could fit upwards of forty tetras. They produce very little waste, and they're really small fish.
I wonder though, wouldn't it be difficult to feed so many fish? Making sure the food gets to all of them... Sounds tough!:%)
Anyways, that sounds like a pretty good tank idea, just make sure that if you buy the neons, they are healthy and active. Neon tetras are supposedly disease-carriers.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

After I posted that, I started thinking about Cardinal tetras instead. I just think neons look so nice in a lighted tank with the room lights off.

I've been thinking about doing a neon tetra tank for awhile. My plan is to have black gravel, a school of albino cories and then a large school of neons... I think it would be very cool. I posted about it months back and several people suggested cardinals because they are much hardier. In my case I think we're setting up my husband's cichlid tank first so I have more time to decide. Let us know what you end up doing.

I think if you are gonna go for just neons or cards, I think you could probably do a massive school of around 75 of the guys, maybe more.

I have a friend who had a cardinal species tank (well, there was a small pleco of sorts to eat algae). It looked really nice. In a large school, the cardinals just thrive. So, I think it would make a nice tank. I'd probably lean towards cardinals, if I were you because they're a bit hardier.

Cardinal tetras are way nicer. They look much nicer than neons do. I have only 11 cardinals. I would have more, but they're really expensive near me...so.

go with cardinals!!!

i have 21 of them in my 6foot tank (with rummies, diamonds, cacatuoides, sterbai corys, royal whips and hatchets) and they are just gorgeous in large numbers - i used to have a school of 50, many years ago, with three white angels - a gorgeous tank.

Yeah, I think I've decided on cardinals after hearing what everybody else has said. :%)

They're not that much higher than neons here. Not since I last checked anyway.

ya id have to agree with everyone and go for cardinals too. they are hardier and dont you think they also look better?

id get a school of about 40 because i also like the idea of maybe getting some corys and a BN just to help cleanup. the cards will look beautiful in a planted tank!

Cardinals, once settleed in are quite hardy. However, you want to make sure your LFS stocks nice, disease free, fat bellied individuals, as they are usually wild caught, and will sometimes starve. IMO, neons would be the better choice, as they are cheaper, and if well cared for, should be very hardy. Their disease ridden rep comes from neons that have been shipped for long distances and poorly cared for. If kept in ideal conditions, neons are almost as beautiful and hardy, and live longer, too.
