If there are plenty of each, then they will school separately. Two neons and two cardinals might school together though, if only out of stress. Given the opportunity though, neons and cardinals will form their own schools.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

I agree with sirbooks, they will school together, only if in small numbers. If they have a school of their own, they'll stay separated.

They will school together. At one aquarium society meeting I went to, they showed a underwater video of some part of the Amazon. There was a GIANT school of neon tetras, but when I looked closer, I could see that some were neons and some were cardinals.

Because schooling is based on sight, they will school together. They look virtually identical, so I doubt the fish would be able to tell the difference.

Just for the purity of a tank though, I would try to get only one kind. However, if it is unavoidable, they will school together.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
