I am preparing to move my 18 inch pacu into a new larger aquarium. I was looking for advice on how to do this with as little stress as possible on him. I was wondering if I make sure the water conditions are the same in both tanks if I could just transfer him directly as opposed to acclimating.

A little background on Thor, (in case you're curious) I bought him from a lfs this past winter. At that time he was about 14 inches in length and they were keeping him in a small display tank in which he could barely turn around. Even though I knew what I was getting into, I couldn't just leave him there to suffer. They had no price on him so when I enquired, they told me to name a price. Needless to say, I bought him. He was almost jet black when I bought him, but he has now returned to a silver with black tail and a reddish belly. He's a great fish and I'm currently researching the viability of building an indoor pond for him and my other pacu to live in.

whoa... how do you move such a large fish??
If the water's exactly the same... I don't think you'd need to acclimate him.

That's what I was thinking, but I thought I would run it through here first and get other people's opinions. I really want to make sure that whatever I do will be the best for him.

As long as the replacement tank is mature and you are transferring the water from one tank to the other, it should work fine. As for catching and moving, I'd suggest you don't net him. Use the net to corner him and then move him by hand if possible. The struggle will be more manageable for it and will increase the chances of survival.

ok, not to sound stupid, but how exactly do I move him by hand? I assume you mean actually grab him, but what is the best way to do that?

My suggestion would to move him in a tub. I would grab him out by hand and stick him in the tub and empty the other tank enouhg that you can just dump the tub water in partially.

Hmm...this could get interesting, did I mention that he's 18 inches and has large teeth? That makes me a little nervous about handling him with my bare hands.

That sounds like a good idea though...*begins looking for appropriate tub*
