I've got a problem with my serpae tetras! Well, last night when I was looking at them, I noticed only one of the fish do not have a black spot behind the gill as did the other five. I was looking closer and noticed a bit of white on the back dorsel fin. Noting that the fish are a bit more red than the pink and black they are supposed to be, I did some research. Another fish, the red phantom tetra, has the exact same body, with the black patch, and males have white on the back dorsel fin.

Can anybody tell me about red phantom tetras? I can't find too much on them, and indeed if this is what they are, I want to make sure when I purchase 1-3 more like my original plan, I want to get the same species

There's not really much you need to know. They are hardy, peaceful, and need the same temps as most trops. They eat everything.

I have black phantom tetras in my community tank atm. They look very similar to serpaes, and should basically be given the same care. They are schooling fish, like most tetras, and are pretty hardy too. They'll munch on bloodworms and flakes. Very typical tetra like COL said.

I have a small school a black phantoms. The males of the red phantoms would have longer fins and the anal fins would be black and the females would have red anal fins. Also the colouration of serpaes I have noticed tend to be more of a reddish pink with black fins. The colour change is definate. With red phantoms the body colour blends with the fin colour.

Hai, two of my "Serpae" Tetras are definatly a color difference from the calmer pink of the others - they are red, and yes, they have the black fins
