I am getting a 30 gallon tank, and I am adding about 8 Rummy nose tetras. I have never kept them before and I was wondering if anybody had any tips?

Thankyou!

They are good fish, and not nippy. They reach a little less than two inches in length, and are very beautiful. However, they can be delicate, especially when they are being introduced into a new tank. They should be acclimated with special care.

They also school very beautifully. But, to echo what sirbooks said, take your time to acclimatize them. They don't handly change very well.

Be careful transporting them -- I found out the hard way than when they're transported in a crowded container or in some other way that frightens them, they extrude enough of the "warning" chemical given off by a lot of small Tetras that they can actually throw each other into fatal shock. Other than that, I've had very litle trouble with them.

Rummynose Tetra are lovely fish & have very beautiful colours & stay in a school, nearly all the time. I would get 10 & take your time to acclimatize them. They don't nip fins from other fish & they are really cute.

I would put in 10 at the very most.
Rummys are one of my favourite tetras, the first time i bought some i did'nt acclimatze them properly and before you know it i lost them all purpose of this story is to take your time to acclimatze them.
also be very careful when transsporting them like Bruce Moomaw said.

I have 10 of these... They school wonderfully and are very active for tetra. They are extremely delicate however and a low pH is a must, I wouldn't consider putting them in anything over 7.6 at the most. I recommended using the drip method to acclimatize these fish. Even with the absolute best conditions possible, die-off can be expected. Anywhere from 10-25% is normal and possibly more depending on the stock quality. These fish should go into a CYCLED tank ONLY, these fish WILL NOT LIVE THOUGH A CYCLE.

They grow rather large, and should not be housed in a 30 gal aquarium with three gouramis.

lol, Thats right. If your still planning to add 3 gouramis to this tank then think again.

10 rummys is the number i recomend without any other larger fish.

30% water changes are good, but I would do them more often. Once a week would be much better, in my opinion. Make sure you do them the same day each week, because a schedule is best for fish, especially sensitive ones like rummies.
