I got a pair of silver dollars for a 54g. Will they be ok with gourami's? I also heard they eat plants, will they eat all of my java moss and fern? They are only about 3-4" right now. Also, is the only way to tell apart a male from a female is that the male has the red on his anal fin?
Thanx for any advice!

Silver dollars are okay with gouramis, but they should be kept in schools of at least six. They will be more shy when only two are in a tank. I recommend adding more if you have the room.

I don't think that they eat plants outright, just take a few nibbles every now and then. If you keep them nice and full, they shouldn't pose much of a threat to your plants.

As for sexing, what you've heard is correct. Males have red on their anal fins, and are a little slimmer than females.

My parents used to keep silver dollars, in a group of 8, and had to replace the plants weekly. They are voracious herbivores, just like many other carachins. Great choice of fish, I would recommend getting at least 2 more, preferably 4 if you feel you have space.
They get quite large, about 6 inches in diameter, but are a peaceful, pleasant fish.

na, a 75g would be good, but not nessecary (excuse the spelling) Silver dollars only get ~6" and they'd be fine in a 54 (i've nvr heard of a tank that size )
