This page purports to be a checklist of all known members of the Family Characidae. At least, those that have been described. The "Tetra geeks" (and I count myself as one ) might like to peruse this list

Even so, it'll do for the time being. At least it'll give everyone a list of names to use for Googling purposes.

Just think - nearly 100 species of Hyphessobrycon alone. Wow. Enough for several lifetimes' worth of study I would have thought.

Here is a similar list from fishbase, with links to brief descriptions.

Link doesn't work any more, must of broke it
If you go to fishbase.org and scroll down the page there is a place to choose the family and get a list.

I think that there is a common tetra that is missing from the list. I could not find Congo Tetras on that list.
