I saw a very interesting and unusual looking tetra at an LFS here at the weekend. I'm fairly certain it was indeed a Tetra , it had that additional small fin just before the dorsal.

Anyway it's was a bright gold color on the entire body and was heavily speckled with black dots, and had a a black horizontal stripe on the miidle of it's body. The most unusual feature was the way it swam - like a penquin tetra in reverse. It was constantly at a 45o angle, BUT head down and tail up.

Any ideas on a name - I'd like to find some addtional info nice looking fish.

Got a pic? It would help a LOT!

Try looking at Chilodus punctatus Headstanders and see if these match your fish. That's the nearest I can come up with without a pic.

I agree, it could possibly be a punctatus. Another fish that comes to mind is the anastomus. Sorry I'm not much help--characins aren't my specialty.

IT definintly sounds like some kind of headstander. maybe a spotted or speckled don't know scientific name. But they get big if my memory serves me correct. 6-8 inches. But don't hold it against me if i'm wrong.

Calilasseia,

Did a google and you are bang on the money ! Interesting looking fish, never seen or heard of them before, so I've learned something new today (gotta love FP). Not for me though, they'd be a bit too timid for my boisterous tank, glad I still stick to my rule of never buying a fish until I know exactly what it is, no matter how gorgeous.

I took care of two of these little guys years ago. You can get vertigo watching them bounce around the tank on their heads (and the little kids at the library where the tank was located drove the librarians nuts with urgent requests to come look at the sick-acting fish); but the only other disadvantage I saw is that they are very territorial as Characins go -- you don't want to crowd more than a few of them into any tank, or you may get fights.

Yes, Headstanders can be fussy little things ... and Chilodus punctatus tends to need a fair amount of live food to keep it happy too. Didn't know they were territorial though ... although if they share a common lineage with Leporinus, then perhaps that shouldn't be surprising, as Leporinus can be utter thugs
