I have a 29 gallon tank. I was thinking about getting some sort of tetra to add because I think they are sooo pretty. I currently have 4 Gold Barbs that tend to stay to themselves for the most part. I have a dojo that they check out alot but I've never seen them nip at him or anything. I also have some dannios that I am planning on trading in. Would tetras be okay with the gold barbs? And, if so, which tetra would you recommend?
Thanks for your help

I think most types of tetras would be ok, maybe not the nippy ones such as tiger barbs. I would go for a school of cardinal tetras. They look nice, stay small, and are peaceful. Don't forget to get at least 6 of any tetra, they need schools!

IME, Gold Barbs are pretty safe, although some people have problems with nipping. I'd say you'd be fine with more or less any tetra unless you're having nipping issues. I'm always a fan of Flame Tetras, and they'd add a bit of body to a tall tank that, say, Neons might not, and are a better bet to hang out in the middle-top of the tank rather than the middle-bottom. Normally I'm a big Ember Tetra proponent but that's the one place I wouldn't head towards with the Barbs - very very small, very very tempting fish morsels, no matter how adorable.

By the way, great choice of fish - gold barbs are stunning and too often overlooked. Set them off against some green plants and WOW.

I agree -- I have nothing but good to say about Gold Barbs. They're beautiful, and I've never had any trouble at all with them nipping -- even though I routinely keep them with quite small tetras such as Cardinals and Glowlights.

As for your choice of tetras: well, just take a look and see which ones you personally like the looks of. The only type I'd hesitate to keep with them are Ember Tetras -- because those guys are so extremely tiny (like Spotted Rasboras) that they might tempt even Gold Barbs to make a meal of them.

Gold barbs ... the ones labelled Barbus 'schuberti' perchance?

These aren't usually known as nippers. Good companions would be Cardinals, Lemons, Rosies, Diamonds (if they're local bred & live in your water - Bruce has had all sorts of woes with these and Glowlights. If you want a good contrast, try Black Phantoms or Rosies. Or if you want an all yellow theme, and you can find them, try Kitty Tetras!

Thanks for all your help guys! I think I'm leaning toward the glowlight or lemon tetras, but I won't be getting them for at least another week. Thanks a bunch!
