Thats a good suggestion. I have seen your post on an aggressive tank and thought about doing that. I will have to see though. I have been thinking about the lemons also and wanted them in my 55g, but never got any. So this is my chance to keep them. I hear they are very interesting to watch and very pretty.

I think Serpaes are very nice also. Who knows...I may change my mind to an aggressive tank. I definitely want a Bolivian or German ram in my 38g. I have a female German ram in my 55g and she is beautiful. I would love to have a male in the 38g. She isn't exactly aggressive though.

I am thinking about a couple Pearl Gouramis for centerpieces and I would rather have them than the Serpaes. I am not sure about keeping Lemons with them though. I dont know how nippy they are towards other fish.

Actually, if you like serpaes, you can go for an agressive tetra tank (I know, it doesn't sound possible) I have 9 serpaes and a bolivian ram in my 20 long. I'm waiting to get some blue tetras as well. It's a perfect picture of chaos with the fish chasing each other through a maze of driftwood and plants. With a 38 gallon, you could even add some buenos ares tetras. Now those make serpaes look like pussycats.

If you like them, don't be discouraged by the agression, just put them with equally agressive fish.

Any more than 2 schools IMO will look hectic and messy though

I thought about that after I posted the first time. I am going to stick with 2 schools. I will see if any LFS have flame tetras...or the red phantoms.

I won't be setting up the tank for a few months...but I want to have it planned. I will have to see what my options are as far as what the LFS's in the area have to offer. Most are chain stores and have the same types of tetras.

Thanks for the suggestions.[/font]

If you can find them, flame tetras are nice. They are like the other diamond shaped tetras but like the lemon tetra max out at about 1 inch. I think that if you had a school of 8 each, the red and the yellow would look neat together.

Cool. Thanks...I will have to see if I can find them. I need to go window shopping to see what the LFS's usually carry. Most times I am looking for a particular fish so I don't see what all they have.

serpaes can sometimes get nippy, so no, i wouldnt put them with lemons. black/red phantoms make a good sustitute though, and look almost identical to serpaes

I already have head and tailight, Rummynose, and neon tetras, so I am looking for another kind (or two).

Sorry guys...I wasn't very clear. I meant that I have those in other tanks...so I want this tank to have different tetras than I already keep. I should have clarified myself.

Cali: I have actually thought about lemons. I have seen them in LFS around here, but have never kept them. If I was to get them, what other type of tetra would look nicely with them. I have decided (for now) to only put 2 types in the 38g and have about 10 of each.

I have always though Serpaes were nice and colorful, but I know they are nippy. Would the Lemons be ok with them? Also, is there any centerpiece fish, such as a Gourami, that could be with the Serpaes and not get their fins shredded?

Personally I'd increase the size of the existing shoals instead of adding another species. However, if you ARE set on getting another species, go for Lemons. Nice contrast with the existing inmates, nice and hardy, colour up beautifully if you feed them colour flake and live food (frozen bloodworm will do as a substitute) and they have a perky disposition that is lively without being aggressive, though males when 'jousting' to establish the pecking order tend to look aggressive to the untrained eye ... if you watch them closely, however, they always pull their punches, so to speak, it's all ritual.

Hope this helps!

It sounds like you will have some nice mid-level schools, but what about some silver hatchet tetra to even it out on the top. I think you will find the hatchets VERY interesting along with your other tetras! Hope this helps!

maybe a bunch of hyphessobrycons (i think thats how you spell it) such as bleeding hearts, lemons, rosies, and black/red phantoms. you can also add some purple emperors but theyre not really the schooling type. congos would be a nice addition to your tank as well.
