Hi everyone

I am looking for a tetra that will be suitable for my 300gal American setup containing Uaru, severums, threadfin acaras, sajicas, Altum angels, Nicaraguan parrot cichlids, some corydora barbatus and gold spot plecos (L001's). Obviously want them to inhabit the upper reaches of the tank to mainly help the Uaru but I also want them to happy and healthy and not get eaten. I would really like something from south or central america preferably

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
Noddy

You could try either black widow or Buenos Aires tetras. They grow larger than most tetras, are South American, and should do okay in your setup. I'm aware that the other fish in that tank might be willing to eat tetras, but larger tetras *should* be all right.

Just a suggestion, but have you thought about pencilfish? They get fairly large as well, and can be tough. To be honest though, I'm not sure how well they would work in a tank with big cichlids like that. Pencilfish can be timid. You should get clarification on these fish first, before seriously considering them.

You could get a school of Silver Dollars. These will get larger than Black tetras, and they are from South America also. Most other tetras are too small to keep with your cichlids.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The Altums I believe I will be able to raise as I don't think they will be any harder than breeding the Uaru which I have done quite a few times. The issue of the barbatus is something I am yet to solve as i read that they do need a lower temp.....still unsure about them but i really do want them.
In respect to the silver dollars I was really looking for something that will be considerably smaller than everything else in the tank. I am alos going to plant the tank very heavily in riccia, vals, java moss and swords and let them establish prior to adding most of the fish, especially the Uaru and Sevs, which should help the tetras in respect to being preyed on during the night

Thanks again

Anything smaller than a black widow will probably end up being lunch. As for the altums, if you do manage to breed a pair, do except to get some publicity, as though it has been done, altum spawning is a considerably rare experience, and confirmed reports of them breeding are far fewer in number than of uarus.

Thas cool about the Alutms.... If they breed they breed but if they dont I will not be real worried I have just always wanted them. If they show signs I will probably help them along but as I said I'm not overly worried about it.
