I got 8 of them for my 75gallon on Tuesday. The tank is cycled and all water parameters are stable. The pH is a little higher in my tank then the LFS tanks so I acclimated them over an hour and a half. Tank mates: guppies, cories, some ghost shrimp and a ton of guppy babies.

They've been schooling together since I got them but today they seem to be swimming apart from each other. Other then that, acting normally. I haven't had tetras in years so is this normal behavior to not school from time to time?

my black neons very rarely school together. most of the time they are just doing there own thing. they do school occassionally, but mostly only when i turn the lights on or off and only for a few minutes then.
I think it's pretty normal!

Well congratulations, you´ve made them feel safe and at home!

When you added them to the tank they were of course a bit nervous and therefore kept together. Now they have settled in and dare to venture around on their own. Isn´t it typical, you want your fish to feel as good as possible and when you manage they reward you by breaking up the nice school you wanted them to be in the first place, stupid fish!

Adding a larger fish to develop a threat might work for a while but they´ll soon get used to that too.

So here I am once more...

If you were to add something like an angelfish, the tetras would school, at least for a while. The angel *shouldn't* bother the black neons, but they don't know that. Therefore, they would school together, to make them feel safe.

The only tetras that I have owned that have stayed together are congos. I have black neon's, cardinals, Congo and glowlights in with 2 red blood parrots, 4 silver dollars, rainbow fish and until a week ago 4 angels all very much bigger fish but still they don't school. The only ones that do as I say are my congos. I would not suggest you get any angel fish or anything else that may grow to this size your tank is not big enough to house such sized fish. My tank is huge so it can take the larger fish. You could try platys or mollies or even a swordtail.

No, not swordtails. They get fairly large (four inches) and are really active. Plus, I personally don't like them.

An angelfish would probably fit in that tank. You would be safe adding one angel, and one more black neon. Since your tank is a 20 tall, the angel will probably fit, though that is a debated point.

I now have 13 black neons (9 adults and 4 of their offspring) and they never schooled since they were added to 75 gallon community tank. When the adults were in my 29 gallon QT for a month when I 1st got them they always schooled. I found the fry after moving the adults to my 75 gallon and now that they're bigger and they're in with their parents now.

hah! ain't that the truth. Well at least I know it's normal behavior. As far as adding bigger fish... yea I definitely plan to do that. I'm stocking this tank slowly at the moment. Eventually I want to get into discus but an angel or two isn't out of the question.

Thanks for all your replies everyone. I'm very happy I got these black neons.. I think I like them better then regular neons.

sirbooks yes I have to agree with you the swordtails are very active but I was thinking with all that activity the neon's may school and they are a lot smaller than angels but like you say maybe a bit big for this sized tank but I was thinking they are smaller than angels and maybe would be the next best size but like you say I don't think I would recommend it I have 5 of the cretins and they drive the other fish mad with there darting around but they don't seem to nip or attack and my neons still don't scholl so maybe not swordtails on the other hand Angels are very active also and can be very aggressive especially if there is just not enough room they will turn on any fish it don't matter to them so think very carefully about it. I have just re homed 4 angels because of this reason. I have lost a number of fish due to the angels attacking. It has all stopped now they have gone.

Oh, they are -- they too are Characins. (The division between "Tetras" and other types of Characins is extremely fuzzy and realy arbitrary.)
