i have a school of 6 black phantoms, 2 male, 4 females, and yesterday i bought them 5 companions, 2 males, 3 females. the new females have pale red pelvic and adipose fins, which looks very cool, but which i've never seen before. the males from the new batch and all the older batch have black/dark grey fins.

any idea on the red-finned girls?

I've never seen black widows without the reddish tinge.

Black Phantoms (which I still know by the old taxonomic name of Megalamphodus megalopterus) are actually sexually dichroic in this respect. Males have all black fins, while the females have red pelvic fins and a red adipose. That makes selecting a breeding pair SO much easier than with many other Characins!

This page contains the best pictures to illustrate this that I can find quickly. The venerable Innes book has even better pictures in the colour plates that were added to later editions (e.g., the 1966 edition that I have).

thanks for the info -

i only started keeping these guys about a month ago and had thought finnage size was the only indicator of gender - damn those dark display tanks!

Oh, of course, forgot. Black Phantom males develop amazingly tall dorsals and anal fins in the right setting. Top quality males are stunning to behold even if they are monochronme! And the females' colour makes up for the lack of finnage in comparison. A nice species choice. Wish you LOTS of success with them, and hopefully some future posts announcing their spawning!
