i was browsing the internet late last night and came across a really pretty tetra, as im stupid i forgot to note the name down and now cannot find it!

It was red, and shaped much like a 'normal' tetra, (eg neon, glowlight) etc...

I remember it had really red fins, perhaps with pattenrs on i cant remember.

ive spent 2 hours trying to find it this morning but had no luck.

cheers

Two possibilities come to mind: the Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae), and Axelrodia riesei. The former is a tiny litle thing that's started turning up in increasing numbers in fish stores in California, although it seems a bit pale for my taste. The latter is a beautiful red-orange fish which is apparently very delicate and hard to ship, which may explain why I have yet to see one in a store.

Got it!

A personal favourite of mine - Poecilocharax weitzmani.

Be advised this is a hard species to keep. Bruce Moomaw (one of our resident characin aficionados) told me that they need live food in the diet, and will probably not touch anything else. Furthermore, the type of live food they need is fairly specific. It's not jsut that their food needs to move, but needs to move in a certain way to trigger the feeding response. This is strictly an expert's species. Which is a pity, because as you have discovered, it is utterly gorgeous.

You could always try Beckford's Pencil Fishes, Nannostomus beckfordi, if you're looking for something different!

My LFS (I'm about 15 miles from Liverpool by the way) got them in stock a couple of years ago. They're the toughest of all the Pencil Fishes, and a good "Beginner's Pencil Fish". They're also feisty critters! I've had mine for two years now and they're very definitely fish with a personality, as well as being beautiful to look at.

Give them a mixture of plant thickets and open spaces, and if you can, try to make sure that females outnumber males. Watch the males closely, because this is a Characin that exhibits marked territoriality. If you put three males together, two will pick on the third at the bottom of the pecking order and make his life miserable. Either stick to one male, or get a big shoal of bachelors, unless you''ve the space to keep a decent number (say 12+).

i was up in liverpool a month or so ago, (went to anfield)

what i have is an empty 125 litre tank, fluval 304 on its way with co2 and everything on its way aswell

plants on there way, lots of amazon swords, java moss and ferns. and its all on a bed of very fine gravel. (going to have a wall of java moss as a back drop )

i wanted to have a shoal of neons but im just put off by the hardiness of them.

Add 12 Beckford's Pencils if you can find them.

A good place to look if you know the area is Maidenhead Aquatics in Bold Heath. It's not far from the M62 motorway. If you pop in there, chances are they'll have Beckford's in stock, and if they don't, they can get them as a special order because they use Beckford's Pencils in at least one of their display aquaria.

Oh, the place is run by a guy called Paul Dixon. Former fellow aquarist society member. And former Discus breeder. Knows his stuff. 32 years' continual fishkeeping experience to his credit, and a raft of show wins. Listen to his sagely advice.

Maidenhead Aquatics is a large company. With branches all over the place. This link will help you find the nearest branch.

Maidenhead Aquatics

Website provides a map allowing you to trace your nearest branch in the UK.

A good place to start would be Woburn Sands, which is near Milton Keynes. They have a branch there. Like many of the branches of the company, it's situated in a branch of Ryevale Garden Centre (just like the one near my home: I gather Ryevale Garden Centres are part of the same franchise).

If that branch is near you, it may be worth a checkout.
