my cardinals have gone nuts, and are turning on each other.had them for 4 months, all was fine till monday. then they went crazy. chasing, nipping ect. I had a school of 10, now down to 3. all the others have died of war injuries- all fins nipped off, eyes missing, ect....
what is going on??
20 gal long- had 10 card, and 6 albino cories. moderate light, moderately planted, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10, ph 6.0

any ideas of what is going on????

Oh man that sucks! I just bought 10 cardinals myself. Hope that doesn't happen to mine. I have no idea what could be the problem.

Cardinals have always been a bit on the nippy side for me--at least amongst each other (i.e. one of my fat males recently decided that a rock on a side of the ten was his domain, and now chases any cardinal that goes within 3-4 inches from it). I've never, however, heard of them nipping one another to death/gouging out eyes/etc. Yeesh.

i havent added anything, or changed anyhting, they just went nutzo. they were aways a bit nippy, but this is a bit much, im now down to 2. one on each side of the tank. the remaining 2 are females.
Going to take the crazy buggers back to the lfs.

I've never heard of anything like this. It's possible that they may have one of those damn protozoan infections that attack tetras so frequently, and which in this case might be attacking their brains. Have any of them been swimming in a peculiar way (such as spiraling)?

Not sure. Cardinals are supposed to be very peaceful fish. Have you actually watched them injure each other?...as in watch them tear apart fins?...They could be getting attacked and probably are frantic maybe

In smaller end tanks 10-20 for example, cardies tend to be a bit nippy towards one another. IME, even in larger tanks, they still play a bit of "cops n robbers" during feeding time.

They have always been a bit nippy, but i never thought it would get like this- i witnessed one of the attacks, so i know it was them.only other fish in the tank is albino cories- i SERIOUSly doubt its them.

ive taken the last 2 back to the lfs, gonna leave it just cories for a few weeks incase it is/was some type of infection, in the meantime gonna figure out what to put in there.

Well you did the best you could. Taking back the cardinals shows you are a dedicated fishkeeper. Good job.
