Male Black Phantoms will partition the tank for display purposes (both to each other for machismo purpposes, and to the females for procreation purposes). When you see several males flashing those towering dorsal fins at each other, that's why they're not shoaling in the conventional sense - they're too busy trying to boogie with the females

It's hard to understand why do some fishes school and some don't. My tiger barbs are schooling now, after being in my tank for over a year. Maybe it was the simple threat of my larger cichlid (electric yellow) in the tank back then which caused them to congregate together. Though the cichlid is not aggressive.

Just a thought.

My 6 black phantoms hardly school...sometimes when they are hungry they tend to stay together...but they all have their special spots in the tank it seems like.

My 8 black phantoms school... occasionally. When I do water changes, or right before feeding, they school just fine. At other times, they form various "sub-schools", I guess you could call them, with 3 or 4 tetras schooling together, and all the others doing their own thing. The membership of the sub-schools varies, as well, it's not always the same few tetras schooling. I find their social behavior fascinating, personally.

I have 9 black phantoms and they do not school. Usually are in the same general area but going every which way. And there is alway one or two adventurous ones that go off on there own.

I used to have 7 black phantoms in my 25g, they would school most of the time but not always. Seems like yours are just odd

I've had black phantom tetras in my 30g for about 5 months now. I originally purchased 5 then added another five a month later.

They are active fish, eat well and are growing, but they don't school at all. Is this common with black phantoms or do I have an odd group?

Mine don't really school either, but often hang out in the same half of the tank. But then, I don't have anything more aggressive than a dwarf gourami in the tank, which they chase frequently! The males chasing the females (and sometimes the other way around) is entertaining. Maybe I got mine from the same place you got yours from

the only tetra that look like a black phantom is the red phantom. and the odds of them disliking each other are pretty narrow i think u just have an odd bunch. like everyone always says, its the personality of the fish...my guess is that they wer all from the same spawn and just dont like to school as tightly as they should. its like u need to teach them:%)

Might just be mine then They're really great looking fish and I thought they'd make a nice looking school. They're in with an angel and a pair of kribs but everyone behaves so no schooling I guess.

i think u may haver an odd group. i also have a school of 10 black phantoms. they stay in the same general area but will school often. i expect them to school even more when i add my rummynose tetras today and my rams next week. maybe they just need bigger fish to keep them in line or any other fish bigger or the same size
