Get 6 Neons for the tank, that way they'll school and you should be okay. As for the others, both should be fine, but for the ten gallon, I'd recommend the ottos (2-3) as they'll work as a clean-up crew. Make sure you have a ton of algae before getting them though, as they (the ottos) will eat it up in NO time

Also, for future reference, it's Kuhli Loach

EDIT: Specifying who "they" was

I personally would not suggest ottos for a 10 gallon tank. While they'd be okay with the neons, the fact that 10's are hard to keep stable isn't good for them. Additionally ottos prefer faster moving waters than is generally achieved in a 10. If you're looking for an algae eater for a planted 10 try malaysian trumpet snails, if it's a non planted tank, then any snail will work. I'd suggest addressing the problems causing the algae first, then find something to consume it.

Coolie Loach
Kuhli Loach

Both are accepted spellings.
HTH a bit .

I agree that a snail would be better. If you go with the snail, you could have up to 10 neons safely. Shrimp would also work, but in my experience at least, they don't last very long.

Coolie loach is a common name - saying it's not valid is more or less like saying "neon tetra" isn't valid, they ought to be called Innesi tetras. It's a perfectly normal, acceptable common name. After all - you guys all knew what was meant, and that's what matters.

myself i would skip the kuhli loaches.
I bought 6 of these guys. Quarantined them cuz they didnt look the healthiest. 2 died that night.
I moved 4 into my 10g tank.
3 disappeared. I found 1 crispy on the carpet, 2 others never did show up anywhere.
1 is left. I see if maybe once a week. They hide by diving under the gravel, and if You want a fish your son will see and enjoy, kuhlis are not it.
Others may be up the challenge, but me and my boyfriend call kuhlis "the loach with a death wish" cuz they like to jump outta the tank.
Good luck!
I think you would be better off buying a dwarf botia, or perhaps a hillstream loach.
