I am thinking of stocking my 4ft with a school of silver dollars. How skittish are these? How many should I have? (only other stock would be 4 clown loaches & a pleco) Do they desimate plants in the tank? Are they as beautiful to have as they look in the shop? (look so stunning & serene schooling) thx in advance ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

In my experience, 4ft tanks are around 55-90 gallons. Thats a big stretch. I dont think I would attempt silver dollars in anything less than a 90g tank. The lack of space wouldnt allow the dollars to show their true schooling ability, and these fish definetly look best in a large school. They are not particularly skittish, not if they are kept in large enough tanks. They are peaceful, but not timid. Silver dollars are almost completely Vegetarian, so Unless you mind replacing plants all the time, I would be careful what you pick. Tough Hardy Plants that are not generally eaten my most fish would be a good bet. They would look great a nicely planted tank though. He totally freaked and eventually bursted for buying so many plants ]:|! That is why I suggest you save up some cash to buy lots of plants every second day or use fake ones. Now if two can do that, imagine what a whole school can do? ![]() ![]() |

From what has been said 4ft isn't a big enough tank. Also, my cichlids I had ate every plant in sight so I would like to try and keep a few plants this time around. Thanks for the help but I my look at the gourami option. ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |

You could do dwarf gouramis of any variety, honey, flame, blue, green etc. You could do Pearl Gouramis, they are very nice, amazingly vibrant, and look gorgeous in a nicely planted tank. They are great munchers of algae as well. You could probably even go for one of the larger gouramis, gold, opaline, or blue, or moonlights, etc. Paradise fish would be cool as well. Try not to mix 2 of one of the gold opaline or blue, unless they are for sure male and female. You could prob do like 1 opaline gourami, several pearls, and then some bottom feeders like corys, or a cool catfish or loaches, and that should do it! Good luck!
