Just found one of my 8 rummy without his tail! Poor little guy is wiggling to swim and barely able to keep up with the school. Fortunately they don't stray too far from him. I just can't figure out how it happened No one, and I mean NO one in the tank would have bitten it off, they're not the type. Unless an otto latched on and nibbled it off but I doubt it. It's only the thin part and I think he'll survive. He's energetic. I wish I knew how it happened. There's no sign of disease and water conditions are excellent. Too wierd.

I had the same thing happen & it couldn't of been another fish that bit it off. One minute he was fine, and a couple hours later his tail was just gone. However, this one couldn't keep up with the group. I had to put him down. I never figured out what caused it.

Like many other schooling tetras, rummies can be a bit nippy towards one another. Chances are, if your water quality is fine, the loss of finnage will likely be the doings of another fish in the tank---if not one of the rummies, something else.

I'm having the same problem in my tank, but it was one of my tiger barbs that lost his tail. He's much smaller than the others, seems not to be growing. But he is active and eats plenty. Someone nipped at the soft part of his dorsal fin, too. I never see any of the fish doing it and the rest also seem healthy.

Fins suddenly disappearing is often the sign of a severe bacterial infection. Did you notice any kind of discoloration on the fish?

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

That has also happened to me before. I added a very small dose of melafix to the water and it seemed to help him heal within the following week
