BETTA EMERGENCY!!! [photo attached] | |
RIFIFOOL Fingerling Myspace.Com/Sheereen726 Posts: 41 Kudos: 16 Votes: 26 Registered: 27-Apr-2007 | Once again, this is the deal where the betta isn't mine. It belongs to my sister and she woke me up this morning and said that her fish was just dieing after it was totally fine yesterday. When I looked at him, his left eye has buldged drastically out of his head and there looks to be a white film that has grown over it. I noticed he can't see out of it at all because when I move my hand next to that eye, he does nothing, but as soon as I move it to the one that's ok, he flutters his fins around. All he's been doing is resting on the bottom of the tank. He doesn't move at all unless you go near him. He will swim, but only if you move your hand near him so he can see you. My sister doesn't keep water parameters or anything like that so I can't really specify those. Just yesterday she did a water change in her 1.5 gallon tank and cleaned the filter. He was perfectly fine until this morning. Does anyone know what could be wrong with him?? I'm going to attach a picture so you can get a better idea. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/MakeDamnSure1460/Picture018.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/MakeDamnSure1460/Picture017.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/MakeDamnSure1460/Picture016.jpg 1 Ocellaris Clown: $14.95...1 Pink Dottyback: $12.99...1 Three Striped Damsel: $4.50...1 Blue Velvet Damsel: $8.95 The Problems that come with them: Priceless |

It sounds like the fish has popeye, either from a knock or trauma, or from a bacterial infection. You need to ensure that the water is kept very clean. Gently change some of the water every couple of days or so. I would turn off and remove the filter whilst the fish is ill, as they get quite stressed by water movement. Lower the water level so the fish doesn't have to make an effort to breathe. Treat with a general antibacterial medicine and feed sparingly if the fish will eat. Keep him nice and calm to aid his recovery. ------------------------------------------------- I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. And now she said that this morning when she went to check on him, he was violently splashing the water and swimming in really fast circles. When she tapped the glass to get him to stop, he fell to the bottom of the tank and started twitching. Then she noticed that the eye had become more of a gash in that side of his face. As though it ate away at him. I'm hoping that I can fix the picture so you can see. I'm not sure why it didn't work. 1 Ocellaris Clown: $14.95...1 Pink Dottyback: $12.99...1 Three Striped Damsel: $4.50...1 Blue Velvet Damsel: $8.95 The Problems that come with them: Priceless |

That would of stressed him bad, thats why he fell and twitched. Soulds like it's on it's last legs to me. But goodluck. Hope you safe him. Try melafix and pimafix. Excellent fixers them two. your link doesnt work. You need to hyper link it. |

She's in the shower and I just went to check on him and he's dead. I feel really bad. She's going to be devastated. 1 Ocellaris Clown: $14.95...1 Pink Dottyback: $12.99...1 Three Striped Damsel: $4.50...1 Blue Velvet Damsel: $8.95 The Problems that come with them: Priceless |

Thats gonna be mostly water quality related, and if shes gonna be devastated by things, then shes gonna need a test kit so she knows the water quality, and do appropriate maintenance, and keep a closer eye on the fish so the signs of infection are noticed earlier. Thats the needed standard to avoid such upset, and when shes a bit calmer and got over it , it might be worth reminding her of that before she gets another fish. Theres no way that eye was an overnight thing, she probably did as most kids do, just not notice it until it got really severe. The bacterial plaques that fish had usually take at least 48 hours to form. Always tough when its not your fish though, sincere apologies for the loss. Sorry if im sounding harsh, i'm not meaning to. |

I mean normally I notice the fish a lot because I'm the one who fed the little guy half of the time. I would have nocitced it myself because I watch how excited he seemed to get when he saw people walk in the room. I'm guessing I don't have to worry about it anymore. Not because he's dead, but because she gave up and gave the tank to me. I am upset, though. She had him for quite a while and even I was fond of him. I really wish I had caught sight of it sooner if it was noticeable. 1 Ocellaris Clown: $14.95...1 Pink Dottyback: $12.99...1 Three Striped Damsel: $4.50...1 Blue Velvet Damsel: $8.95 The Problems that come with them: Priceless |

I've always found that when they get sick from a bacterial disease, they get very sick very quick ()and die. Because the brand names and type of meds change from country to country, I don't tend to recommend anything specific. ------------------------------------------------- I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. It was very sudden, mine didnt have any infections visable at all. Maybe mine was age, I have no idea. Only took 2 days from noticing he was ill till he died. Hope your sister cheers up soon. |
