He might be old AND sick. 3 years is good for a platy. I have a girl named 'Zappy' hitting somewhere between 2-3.

Could be constipated, could be an internal infection or parasite. More info required. Loss of appetite could be many things. Is there other symptoms ? Clamped fins ? Can it poo ? Is it white and stringy or appear normal ? Any bloating around the tummy ? Is the fish 'gilling' ? What color are the gills ? For such a small tank, a nitrate test should be done at least. Does anyone know the lifespan of a balloon molly? I have one in a 2 Gallon UGF Hex tank. I have had this little molly for 3 years. He is the only inhabitant of the tank and was born in this tank.

The last two days he has been sitting on the bottom panting. I tried feeding him and he swam to the top and tried to eat but it didn't look like he was getting any food. I have done 20% water changes everyday since this started, but have seen no improvement.

Unfortunately I don't have water quality information as I don't test the water in this tank.

Is he just old or sick?

Well, unfortunately it died last night. I also lost three Neons that were in quarantine. Last night was a lousy night as far as fish are concerned.
