My BGK is actin' really strange. He no longer hides under rocks; he is constantly active. I've trained him to come up the top of the tank for food, and he does that constantly. Seems like his sonar is out of whack. One other thing: I see him let out air bubbles every now and then...

What do you all think is the problem?

i dont really see a problem, as all of my 10 but 1 dont hide.

how active is he? like just swimming or like bolting around?

just check to see if he is getting stressed by anything.

I dont think there is a problem with him being more active, I have two and they are both quite active during lights on time. I must admit that before I got my second one the first one NEVER EVER came out, it use to just hang out behind the filter so I was wrapt when they both started to swim around.

Mine are both handfed also.

Bettachris, you hve 10? Do they all live together or are they in separate tanks, i'd love more, but 2 is my limit for my size tank.

Those who say they cant, Never will !!!

Two things... One they use electronic organs for "GPS" and two they are labrynth fish (Breath air).

Labyrinths???? Not sure about that one, I've never noticed mine taking air from the surface. They are generally bottom dwellers.

Yeah, I knew the thing about using electric organs; just used "sonar" for short, heh. However, I've never heard of them being labrynths... interesting.

bettachris - he's just swimming, not bolting.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm so relieved. And now and can watch him in peace, knowing that he's in no pain or anything, haha.

Ghost Knives are not labyrinth fish, but seeing as how they are closely related to the Siluriformes (catfishes), I would not be surprised if they can swallow air and absorb the oxygen through their intestines (like catfish can).

No. Labyrinth Fish (Anabantoids) are fish that have a highly-vascularized, lung-like organ right behind their gills. Labyrinth Fish are members of the order Perciformes.

Well guys, I have some bad news... he died about a week ago..

I found him swimming near the top with his tail bitten him off and his fins all torn up... eventually he got stuck on the filter intake... had to euthanize him with a knife. Apparently I had neglected feeding my fish for too long and they got hungry or something. Perhaps it was territorial -I don't know.

Well I'll have to say it was fun keeping him... almost 2 years now... don't think I'll get another though, for a while at least.

if u try again, i had alot of problem keeping them in the beginning, but with failure comes knowledge and after about 4-5 of my first ones died, i got the hang of it.

try keeping them in a species tank, and enjoy the bueaty of them.

So sorry to hear you've lost your BGK, I lost my first one within two weeks of having it.

After keeping him for 2 years you must have been doing something right! .

Good luck with your future ones.

Cheers - Crusha
