Black Moor Goldfish lost an eye! | |
John'sWildKingdom Hobbyist Posts: 50 Kudos: 30 Votes: 3 Registered: 01-Mar-2004 | It's been about 24 hours since my poor large Black Moor Goldfish - Goddard - lost one of his eyes in the gravel vacuum. I never even conceived that this sort of thing could happen, but it did. He swam up in it and it sucked his eye right out of the socket! He's in a 1 gallon hospital right now, with one level table spoon of aquarium salt and a dose of maracyn (erythromycin), and he's eating and not showing any signs of infection yet (no dropsy or anything). My questions are: Are these type of fish susceptible to this kind of injury? I know they are 'selectively bred' to look this way, but I've never heard of one losing an eye, especially like this...it freaked me out! Will he survive and be able to find food? I've had to sink flakes to him for him to find, and he's still having a hard time doing so. I mean, this type of fish has enough visual problems with two eyes. Will he survive with just one? If you have any helpful advice, please let me know. I've had this fish since he was little and I really don't want to lose him. Thanks |

Most fish can get along with no problems at all with just one eye (after they adjust to the change). Also, I would think that Moor goldfish, with those big eyes bulging out of their sockets, would be more susceptible to eye damage. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Fish have a great sense of smell they use to find food. I guess as long as it doesn't get infected or anything it should heal up nicely and be alright. |

I guess he is getting used to it. I've already got a food ring in his regular tank, so I guess he'll be ok once I reintroduce him to it. We shall see... John |
