Hope it would be better here. My sis got one of em blue crayfish and he/she seems to have bubbles on his tale(the edge/rim/flaps). Is this a sign of sensitivity to nitrites? Or something else? TIA Gee The link http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Invertebrates/53841.html?200501291844 Gee !!I think I just learned somthing new!! |

I'm thinking gas supersaturation resulting in Gas Bubble Disease. I don't know if crayfish are susceptible like fish, and where it would show, but it happens. Here's more. [link=http://www.fishjunkies.com/Disorders/gas_bubble_disease.php]http://www.fishjunkies.com/Disorders/gas_bubble_disease.php" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link] Check your filter to make sure there are no cracks. Age your water before putting it in the tank if the pipes are really cold as it leads to even greater gas concentrations in the water. Make sure when you fill a tank, the water splashes in. As for the crayfish, it is best to keep it quiet. Hopefully, the bubbles will reabsorb in time. All we do with fish is to keep them as quiet as can be and maybe dose the tank with melafix to make sure if one pops it doesn't infect. If microscopic bubbles are in the bloodstream, it can also lead to a fatal condition, should it block a major vessel in a key organ. |

It's soft and there is water in there. ![]() Gee ![]() Gee !!I think I just learned somthing new!! |

The advice given contradicts that provided in many texts. The issue is that there are gases in microscopic form that eventually emerge as bubbles all over everything including the fish. You may see this after a large water change. The bubbles aren't there one minute, then they coat everything. This is why it is bad to put a fish in any freshly filled tank that hasn't had time to outgas. Once bubbles appear, its already happening and there's nothing to do but wait, hope and dose the tank with an antibacterial so that popped bubbles don't infect. Adding an airstone only accelerates what is already occuring. Fish need to be kept quiet, preferrably in a dim tank so that they don't dart or excite in a way to allow an airbubble in the blood stream to get to a vital organ. A malfunctioning filter is one source - if there is a crack or a loose connection in the intake, or some other source of air being sucked up into the filter. http://badmanstropicalfish.com/disease.html I would imagine crayfish would be as susceptible as any aquatic animal. I've seen articles involving seahorses, frogs, tadpoles and more. If no other fish are showing bubbles in the eyes, fins, dorsal area, then maybe this guy just had the bad luck of the draw and ended up with some microscopic bubbles getting into his blood stream.
