While trawling around the web for various pieces of information, I found this detailed document on Columnaris disease in fishes. Well worth downloading, as it's been compiled by four scientists working at the Southern Aquaculture Research Center (yes, it's US based), and includes some nice diagnostic illustrations to help in identifying the disease in your own fishes. It also lists a range of treatment options including, if it's available to the aquarist, potassium permanganate (an old standby from the days of the first editions of the venerable Innes book) and more modern broad spectrum antibiotics such as terramycin.

If anyone here suspects that Columnnaris is an issue with their aquarium fishes, download this document, read, compare the photos with your own fishes, then act FAST.
