After battleing staghorn/thread algae, I've come to notice a loner cory on it side not able to swim upright. He seems to be breathing heavly. He has no visible signs of open cuts, no bloating, no fungus, nuttin! I "Q" it. All the other fishes are fine. The tank is a 55gal with Ammonia/NitrIte=0 NitrAte=10-15ppm. I've dosed melafix but I haven't seen any progress...

Is it possible to move him to a smaller tank by hisself? If so do so, and keep treating with the Melafix, also keep and eye on him. If not, keep treating and keep an eye on him BRB...heidi

Bah. hate these 'no obvious signs' mysteries.

You say he's on his side? Never encountered this before. If your Cory was upside down at the surface struggling, then I'd say swim bladder derangement. As a thought, just in case it's constipation related, try feeding something that will have a laxative effect. It's jsut possible that this could be constipation related, and an unblocking of the gut will help. Other than that, this one's mystifying me as much as you.

He's on his side, breathing heavily?

If so, don't get your hopes up too high, but watch him carefully.

Look closely at the base of his fins and into his eyes for any signs of tiny pin-point hemorrhages. Look at his gut and see if you notice any blood pooling, if he is transparent enough.

How are his barbels - long, non-existent, or short?

You said you were battling staghorn/thread algae, were you treating with algaecides? Some of these agaecides can be harmful to fish. They may say they are safe but unfortunately some fishies are still sensitive. IMO all you can do is quarantine the little bugger, do as you are doing with a lot of TLC and hope for the best.

Also, cories are sensitive to gravel quality, by that I mean whether or not it is clean of course because they are bottom feeders. Is it possible the tank has not had a gravel vac in awhile? Just wondering....

Ok Cory_Di no signs of blood anywhere his eyes are fine and his barbels are long!! __ <--- i'd say that long..

Jamie nope no algaecides. Did the natural way introduced co2 higher lights and manual hand removal
The last water change was just right after this msg and before that one was abt a week ago...

After one day he is still not dead, that's good news. I've also noticed that he CAN'T swim with he pectoral fins.

Gee

EDIT: CAN'T

Hello, I too had/have a algae problem and started the CO2 and within a couple of days lost a ram even after quarantining it. I often wondered if it had anything to do with the CO2 but unfortunately there is no way to tell..*shrugs* sorry couldn't be much help. Good luck and I hope your little cory makes it!

Yes the pH does go down but neutral as you posted above is 7... How much did your pH go down?

yeah, pH issue seems backwards. co2 usually lowers it

Sorry you lost him. Usually when a fish has gone to its side, breathing heavily it is often a matter of hours before they expire.

It would be wise not to add any fish to this tank for a good 3-4 weeks to make sure no other fish begin to ail. Some illnesses can pick off one at a time a few weeks apart.

U see the problem is that my water was 6.2 to start with, and the last time I check it was 6.8-7!! I was all concfused bucause from what I heard is that co2 drops with co2. My situation is weird. I suspect that my fish got a ph shock...
