Some attribute the cause to a fungus while others believe they wear them down digging in sharp substrate. Still others are confident they are damaged by predators thinking they're worms to feed on. I can't be really sure. Perhaps all the above are true. Sand substrate, because it is abrasive, has been reported as the cause of barbel destruction in many scrounging Corys. --garyroland. |
