I noticed the other day that my cory's barbels have withered down to a nub. What has happened??

Shrinking barbels has been a popular topic in the past...

Some attribute the cause to a fungus while others believe they wear them down digging in sharp substrate.

Still others are confident they are damaged by predators thinking they're worms to feed on.

I can't be really sure. Perhaps all the above are true.

Sand substrate, because it is abrasive, has been reported as the cause of barbel destruction in many scrounging Corys.
