I found my Florida Flagfish dead today with slight discoloration and a bent fin. Its a new fish I got about a week ago. I did lose a fish recently, it was a cherry barb that was shunned when the other 2 formed a breeding pair. I believe my test kit has been compromised as my first reading showed a Ph of 9 and alkalinity of over 400 ppm. My second reading was more reasonable (ph of 6.8 and alkalinity of 100) but I cant be sure its accurate anymore. I will be getting a new test kit but not until tommorrow.

10 Gallon
Red Gravel
1.5 WPG Fluorescent tube
Average Temp. 75F 24C
Java Moss/Vesicularia dubyana
FISH
3 Cherry Barbs(2 Female, 1 Male)/Puntius titteya
2 Florida Flagfish/Jordanella floridae
1 Giant Ramshorn snail/Marisa cornuarietis
FEEDING
1x daily Nutrafin Max Complete Flake Food
Filter: Millenium 1000 HOB
Heater: Radiant (I think 50 watts)
Water changes once per week
De-Clorinater:Aqua Plus

I know its not a lot to work with but any insite would be very helpful.

the cause of its death could have been a number of things. first off, male flagfish dont get along too well, and one may have killed the other. also, it could have been ill before you got it, as you have only had it for a week. third, if your tests are correct, the massive ph fluctuation may have killed him off. and last, your temp may be too high for them, althogh i highly doubt this killed him, as i have read a number of sources that say 75 is fine

I have some more info that may help.
1. It was the larger of the 2 flagfish.
2.Test listed above were taken within minutes of each other.
3. I noticed the fish was acting oddly about a day before. Seemed to be staying at the surface swimming slowly.

if he was acting odd before he died he was most likely sick before you got it. but just to be sure, did it eat while it was alive, or did it just neglect its food?

I saw it eat once but most of the time the fish would hide when I came near the tank.
