A dwarf gourami has been recently transferred to an 8 gallon QT (no medication). It exhibited a behavior of simply hanging just below the surface of its previous 35g tank. 24 hours for the three straight days at that.

Observed that its apetite remained healthy. Color of body has somehow faded. Other than these, no visible external disorders. Could not be insufficient oxygen, tank is well aerated. Any possible explanations?

ph-7.5
gh- 8
kh- 5
ammonia-0
nitrite-0
nitrate- 12.5mg/l
Water maintenance- 50% weekly water change and gravel vac

what is on top of the tank. becasue gouramis are labryinth fish and breathe air. If there is no space at the top where he could breathe, that could be the problem

If the fish cannot submerge it's the first sign of swim bladder problems...

Either they cannot surface or they cannot submerge. Many times it's not the bladder itself but merely the "valve" that controls gas-in-gas-out of the bladder.

There's really no way of telling. Sometimes the malady rectifies itself and the fish returns to normal.

I had a Gourami that started to fade and I moved him to a 10 gallon quarentine and treated him with Melafix. He was exhibiting the same symptoms as yours. After a week of being treated he started to recover and now he is living happily with my friend as he started to quarrel with my other Gourami. Hope that helps

He would have recovered without "Melafix", an anticeptic...

There was no call for dosing an anticeptic that did absolutely nothing to cure the fish.

Way too many hobbyists are dosing this product recklessly believing it to be a wonder med.

Melafix is not a cure-all for everything. In fact, it has very limited successes and in some instances can be harmful.

fish1, I do not think I listed my nitrate as "0" level. It is the nitrite at "0" level. I checked my posted message again and it read nitrate at "12.5 mg/l"

Garyroland, I would observe the fish for the next few days. As of the moment, it is still maintaining the same position and a normal appetite.

Boil, the surface is all clear. Nothing to serve as impediment for the gourami with regards to it being a labyrinth fish.

I'm not sure, but isn't it ok if Nitrates are at 15 ppm? You don't necessarily need to bring them down all the way to 0. I think And i think my Gourami may have had something more complicated, I didn't notice that you didn't have "small sores" as a symptom and just figured it would be the same as mine. I treated mine mainly for the small sores appearing on his head.
