We just put our fish, a goldfish and a shubunkin, in their new tank. It's been left to settle for the last month and we put some gold danios, zebra danios and white clouds in first to make sure the tank was safe, plus 2 suckers to clean up the gunk that had formed.(Some of them have disappeared or died over this time.) Our 2 large fish are acting all scared and hide all the time. Mind you, one of the little fish was missing this morning so I'm guessing they have an appetite. We don't want to lose the big ones as we have had them for nearly 2 years now but if they are stressed we might. Any reason for their fear?

You need to give a little more information. What size tank is this? What are the PH, nitrate, ammonia levels, etc.? Did the fish that died show any signs of disease and how many are left (danios can be an aggravation to larger, slow moving fish). Perhaps there is someone who can give your more advice after you post the above information.

The ph is around 7 and not sure about the others but should be the same as the original tank the big ones were in. They have gone into a 140lt tank. Only noticed 1 of the white clouds with what looked like fluff growing out of it. It was taken out and put to sleep. This was not long after being bought and we assumed it got illness at the shop. One of the suckers died when the water was changed the day before the big fish were put it. The other one is ok so far.
Out of the 6 white clouds 2 are left. 2 of the 3 gold danios and 3 of the 3 zebra danios. The others have all just disappeared without a trace! Have noticed the danios are rather full on! Big fish don't like the light either but they came from a tank that only had natural light so probably aren't used to it. The water temp is the same too.
Lost a zebra danio over the night making it 2 little fish in 2 days. Big fish still skulking in the back corners.

ok , youll need to clarify the other water qualities. Its highly unlikely that the water qualities are consistant in a different tank with different stocking levels and fish with different metabolisms, you will need to test for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate at the very least. You need to know whats in the tank NOW not a few months ago or in a different tank. High levels of any of the above chemicals could cause skulking , general lethargy and illness, also its worth mentioning that 140 l isnt big for an adult goldfish , and probably not anywhere near big enough for an adult shubunkin which can basically become trout sized fish.

Fish will often skulk when overpopulated , housed with fish that fin -nip, in excessively bright tanks, tanks that are not properly cycled,or in sparsely decorated tanks where they feel vulnerable to being watched or disturbed by vibration, people walking past etc.

Stress can be a killer, and often illness will result. You should be especially concerned as there have been multiple deaths , and its time to really get into the meat of it. If the cause is stress or disease you could lose all of your fish. If youd like us to help we'll need more details, and possibly a piccy or two will help immensely.
