Hi... I've got one male betta who's been battling fin rot for a loooooong time.

I've gone through about every anti-bacterial medication I can find for fin rot... and then low and behold, I hear that fin rot can be fungal as well!! I am only assuming that switching to a fungal fin rot medication is in order. But, am wondering if there is a way to tell the difference between bacterial fin rot and fungal fin rot. Also, if you can't really tell the difference, can you treat with a fungus med and an antibiotic at the same time?

This poor fish!! I feel terrible that I haven't gotten him healed up yet, but it's sure not for a lack of trying! ]:|

Maracyn, an antibiotic, should help...

The tank's pH should be in the 7.0 range or as close as possible and make sure there's no trace of chlorine in the water.

Excellent water quality is a must.

Bacteria finrot is fast acting, the fins turn black and flake off. If it is not caught in time it attacks the fish. This can happen in a couple of days.

Fungal finrot is longer term...ragged edged rot. this can be long term and hard to treat.

Check out this page. It is a good resource.

Yup, and they came out with a new one called Maracyn Plus. I tell people about it every chance I get...that stuff is great. Millions of microscopic spheres attach to the fish and deliver the antibiotic, instead of just treating the water. Sounds corny, but it works so who cares, lol.
